Review: I saw during the LFF. This is a great piece of cinema. It is clear that this is a central theme of slavery and depravity of human nature can be so easy to achieve, but it has many other little moments that trigger thoughts on broader issues - the role of religion is one example. It is a violent and horrible to watch, in a sense, but it is a story of Solomon Northup said honestly. There is nothing saccharine about how Steve McQueen presents, and that's what makes it so amazing. You cry because of what the witness is really terrible, not because the violins are out and tugs the heart strings of Directors. The whole game is top notch, as is the score by Hans Zimmer. It really should be an essential viewing for all old enough to understand. |
